  • Photos printed on cotton ink jet sheets such as Jacquard. Photos with contrast work best. Leave the paper backing attached. See a variety of before and after photos here: http://www.djpettitt.com/mixedmedley.html Please email me at jndpettitt@charter.net with questions.
  • Small container of clear gesso.
  • Small container of white gesso.
  • Small container of Molding Paste or Modeling Paste.
  • Small container of Matte Medium. (This is not the same as gel medium)
  • Small container of Soft Gel Medium.
  • 1-yard white or cream muslin.
  • 1/4" and 1/2" flat brush.
  • # 6 round brush with a nice sharp point.
  • #1 long liner brush for detail.
  • A couple of inexpensive utility brushes about 1" wide (not foam brushes).
  • Collage goodies - anything you would like to add to your book. Ideas include: images, ephemera, tags, lace, buttons, beads, feathers, text from books etc.
  • Pencil with hard lead.
  • A selection of Golden fluid acrylic paints. Include your favorite colors plus Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber Light, Paynes Gray, and Bone Black.
  • Derwent Inktense Pencils. These are water-soluble pencils with intense color. Favorites include: Sepia #2010, Chinese Ink #2030, Willow #1900, Dark Chocolate #1930
  • Derwent Graphitint Pencils. These have softer hues than the Inktense pencils. I love the small set of 12, or choose a small variety of colors you like.
  • About 1\2 yard duck cloth, or other unprimed, canvas-type cloth in cream or white. This needs to be a fairly close weave, and will be used as the base for your book or project.
  • Fabric scraps for creating book covers, using in signatures, inside covers, and spines. Quilting cotton, upholstery fabric, home decorator fabrics, and vintage lace and quilt pieces are a few ideas.
  • Small cutting mat to lay signatures on as you punch holes.
  • Japanese screw punch with a 1/16" tip, or a 1/16" punch and hammer.
  • Glue stick.
  • Old credit card to use for gluing.
  • Trowel shaped palette knife. Flat ones won’t work. My favorite is a cake knife such as Ateco #1385, but regular trowel shaped palette knives are fine.
  • Water container
  • Paint rag and paper towels
  • Flat Paint Palette or a disposable palette tablet.
  • Soft Brayer
  • Box of parchment paper such as Wilton or Reynolds.
  • 3" soft sculpture doll needle for bookbinding

Optional items:

  • Sewing machine and thread, if you would like stitching on your book and to sew the pages to the signature.
  • Hair dryer. I will bring one to share.

$10 material fee (payable directly to instructor in class) includes:

Step-by-step color images for photo altering technique; handout; waxed linen; art tissue; vinyl; heavy Pellon; inclusions; punchinella and lace to use for texture; and various other goodies and essentials.

Note: We will also have “Provisions for the Journey” for sale at the retreat—packets of inspiration filled with textile fabric, trims, laces, and ephemera, and other items selected especially for this class.
