Funky Chunky Coffee Table Book

with kelly Rae Roberts & Mati Rose McDonough

Kelly Rae and Mati Rose are teaming up to share their personal and overlapping painting techniques within the format of a funky chunky coffee table book. Over the course of our three days together, we'll create the front + back covers of the book using oversized hardback book covers. Then, we'll create the inside pages (using thick water color paper) which will all be gorgeously layered with fun mixed media techniques, wonderfully colored with textured backgrounds, and filled with unintimidating ways to paint that you'll be able to continue on your own.

Many of the book's pages will be finished paintings that will incorporate some of our favorite tricks and secrets, including patchwork collage, fun and easy ways to paint faces, layered forest paintings (think birdies and trees), and much more. In the end we'll bind the pages and covers together to create an artful masterpiece perfect for your coffee table - a funky chunky book filled with beautiful pages that are experimental, patchworked, collaged, intuitive, and perfectly messy.

Photos are examples of some of the paintings and background techniques that you'll be learning in class. The actual book you'll be making in clUass is larger.

  • the front and back covers from a large hardback book (8x10 or larger)—we just need the covers (use a razor to cut them off of the book). We’ll be painting these book covers in class, but if it’s an already gorgeous book cover that you prefer not to paint, then that’s okay, too. You may want to bring several book covers with you just to experiment with!
  • pad of cold press watercolor paper (size needs to approx. match the size of your book that you are bringing. If you need to, buy larger sized watercolor paper that you can cut down to the size of your book covers.)
  • a couple of favorite photographs (4x6 or 5x7)
