Dream Narratives

With Katie Kendrick

Katie Kendrick

During our three days together, we’ll approach art making from the perspective of submerging ourselves as a group into the creative and dynamic flow. By embracing a spirit of curiosity and following the “what ifs” as they arise in your mind, the energy of creating takes on a freedom and originality that is enhanced and advanced by the group’s collective intention.

I will share a number of techniques, using a variety of media as we explore ways to express our unique voice on cloth. We’ll be mono printing and stenciling on fabric, using image transfer techniques, simple thread paintings, and drawing and painting on fabric using acrylic paints, oil paintstiks, pencils, pens, and markers. I will also cover basic elements of design, and various ways to create texture and movement with fabric. You’ll then adorn your ‘stories’ with journaling, hand-stitching, embroidery, trims and embellishments—whatever moves you!

Katie Kendrick

You may spend the three days playing with the techniques alone, or use them to create a specific project such as a wall hanging, bag, or fabric book. I will share a variety of options and directions that you might choose to go in, and will work with you individually as specific questions arise. Join me as we learn to follow our intuition and tap into the dreamworld that lies just beneath the surface.

Kit Fee: $15 (payable directly to instructor on day of class)

  • White Fabric - the equivalent yardage of 2-3 yards white tightly woven cotton or linen medium weight muslin. I use recycled fabrics, including white sheets, Jacquard linen tablecloths, etc. Bring opaque fabrics, not sheers. Make sure your fabric is washed and pressed, or at least not heavily wrinkled. A few fabric pieces that are light prints would also be fun to experiment with.
  • Black Fabric - the equivalent of 1-yard black/dark cotton fabric. Again recycled pieces are fine as long as they are big enough to paint on, say 11” x 14”.
  • Shiva artist grade oil paintstiks, your choice of colors including: a colorless blender stik (matte), and matte colors antique white or titanium white, azo yellow, paynes gray, burnt umber and alizaron crimson. When choosing other colors keep in mind that the brown wrapped stiks are matte and the blue wrapped stiks are iridescent. We will be using the matte for painting faces and painting other objects and patterns on white/light fabric, the iridescents for painting on the dark or black fabric. Bring at least one iridescent to play with. A full selection available at http://www.dickblick.com/
  • Clear gesso - (Liquitex is my favorite brand but Windsor Newton makes one too)
  • White gesso - any brand
  • Acrylic paints - A variety of craft paints like FolkArt in your favorite colors. We will be doing mono printing and painting with these paints so you will need full bottles of 6-8 paints minimum, including white, black, crimson, yellow azo or ochre, paynes gray or aquamarine blue, and burnt umber.
  • Paint brushes for acrylic - a couple 1” chip brushes (wood handle with bristles, in paint dept. of hardware store, cheap), 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4” flat brushes; #6 and #8 round, and a detail brush with a point - either a #00 round or #1 liner.
  • Stencil brush - 1/4” or 1/2” http://www.softexpressions.com offers a nice set of 4 brushes. Another option is a stiff bristled toothbrush.
  • Watercolor crayons, 4-5 of your choice - my favorite brand is Caran d'Ache Neocolor II available at http://www.dickblick.com Some of my favorite colors are burnt sienna, turquoise, golden ochre, scarlet, olive, cobalt blue, burnt umber, prussian blue
  • Prismacolor pencils - or other colored pencils for shading that are easily blended
  • Micron Pigma Fine liner pens - brown and black size 05 or comparable pen in other brand
  • White Uniball Signo Um-153 pen - my absolute favorite white gel pen, available at www.jetpens.com
  • Posca Paint Markers, Fine PC-3M - one white, one black and any additional colors you like. I order them here: http://www.durablesupply.com/popamafipc.html. They have the cheapest prices I’ve found and offer reasonable shipping charge. Sharpie poster pens are an alternate option.
  • #2 pencil
  • Stabilo Aquarellable “All” pencil in black. This is a waxy pencil that writes on most surfaces, there are several types of stabilo pencils. You want the one that’s shiny black with dark green rings near the bottom and a white swan on the bottom end.
  • Paper scissors and fabric scissors
  • Sobo fabric glue
  • Roll of masking tape
  • Soft rubber brayer
  • Art apron or long shirt to protect clothing
  • Toner prints of photos or personal artwork: print out 6-8 images (no larger than 4” x 6”) using “mirror image” setting (especially text) as it will be reversed when you transfer. Images can be in black and white or color but must be copied from a toner copier (not laser copier). Not from a laser printer or inkjet printer either. Find a local copier that uses toner—older machines often do.
  • Hand-sewing needle with large eye and sharp point - big enough eye for heavy topstitching thread, upholstery thread, embroidery thread, etc. If you plan on hand sewing entirely and not using a sewing machine at all, bring a variety of needles and threads.
  • Fabric Scraps, trim, lace, buttons, and any embellishments you want to use
  • Straight pins
  • Large metal spoon

Optional:

  • Sewing machine, extension cord, and threads - this isn’t required although is nice to have if you want to attach pieces together by machine; however, you can hand sew and/or use glue for your project if you prefer
  • Iron and old towel for ironing pad - if you’re local, and have an old light steam iron and can bring it that would be great. We’ll also have a couple to share.
  • Hairdryer to speed drying time
  • Grip-n-grip mat no-slip mat - you can order these online at: http://www.dharmatrading.com
  • Rotary cutter and self healing mat
  • Stencils, rubbing plates, rubber stamps, fabric ink pads (we’ll have some to share also)
  • Derwent graphitint pencils

Kit fee includes:

Handout, spray fixative, Citrasolve, printed fabric imagery, transparency images, latex gloves, use of paints, stencils, rubbing plates, rubber stamps, embroidery thread, punchinella, plus individual packets which include interesting sheer and textured fabrics, trim, and lace bits.
